My Corgi Fell 3 Meters. His Reaction Shattered My INTJ Logic.
I’ve always believed that panic is a waste of time. As an INTJ, I process the world through data, not emotion. If you lose control, you lose the problem.
So when Barnaby, my Corgi, slipped off the wet embankment and tumbled three meters down into a concrete drainage ditch, I didn’t scream. I went cold.
The Descent
I didn't run; I calculated the safest route down. The slope was steep, slick with mud. I slid down after him, tearing my jeans and smashing my knee against a jagged rock. The pain was blinding, a sharp, hot knife in my leg. But I pushed it aside. Focus. Assess the dog.
Barnaby was huddled in the mud, whimpering. His front left leg was bent at a sickening angle. A fracture. My mind instantly started drafting the logistics: emergency vet, surgery costs, recovery timeline. I was already managing the crisis.
Then, I reached for him.
The Moment Logic Failed
Barnaby was shaking violently. He was in agony. But as my hand touched his fur, he didn’t pull away. He didn't look at his broken leg.
He looked at my knee.
He saw the blood soaking through my torn denim. And in that moment, this injured, frightened dog did something that defied every survival instinct I knew.
He dragged himself forward—pulling his broken body through the mud—just to lick my wound. His eyes weren't pleading for help; they were filled with concern. For me.
PBTI: When Instinct Beats Intellect
In the PBTI framework, Barnaby is a classic IARO (Interactive, Aware, Relation-driven). His world isn't built on tasks or safety; it's built on connection.
I was there to save him. But in his mind, we were a pack, and his pack leader was hurt. His loyalty overrode his pain. His love overrode his fear.
I sat there in the mud, rain starting to fall, and I felt my rigid, logical world crack open. I realized I wasn't just his owner; I was his person.
A Lesson in Love
I carried him out, his head resting heavy on my shoulder. The surgery was expensive, the recovery long.
But that night, as he slept beside me, medicated and safe, I finally let myself feel the shock I had suppressed. Efficiency keeps you safe. Logic solves problems. But love? Love is the only thing that makes it all worth it.
Barnaby taught me that sometimes, the most rational choice is to simply care.
